The difference between coaching and consulting in the property management industry

There’s been a lot of chatter about Property Management Coaches and Property Management Consultants in the past week. It started with someone asking for a recommendation in a Facebook group and it turned into a heated debate between two people who have a long standing conflict.

As a third party bystander to the conversation I thought I would shed some light on the subject. Business coaches and business consultants are both professionals who can help you improve your business. However, there are some key differences between the two.

Business coaches

Business coaches focus on helping you develop your skills and knowledge so that you can make better decisions and run your business more effectively. They may help you set goals, develop a business plan, improve your leadership skills, develop your policies, improve your profitability, or overcome challenges. Business coaches typically provide you with ongoing support and guidance.

Business consultants

on the other hand, are experts in specific areas of business, such as marketing, finance, or operations. They can provide you with specific advice and solutions to your business problems. For example, a marketing consultant can help you develop a new marketing campaign, while a financial consultant can help you create a budget or manage your debt or a process consultant can help you build out your processes. Business consultants typically work with you on a short-term basis to address specific issues or projects.

Business Coaches AND Business Consultants

It is also important to note that many professionals offer both coaching and consulting services depending on your needs. Often coaching will uncover the needs and desires for project based consulting and therefore, coaching and consulting can take place in parallel. Other times a client knows exactly what they want to achieve and in that case they enter directly into a project based short-term engagement.

If you are unsure which type of support you need, it is helpful to talk to a few different professionals and get their recommendations.

  • It is important to manage the consultant’s work carefully and to ensure that their recommendations are aligned with your goals.

Overall, both business coaches and business consultants can be valuable resources for businesses of all sizes. The best option for you will depend on your specific needs and goals.

Additional factors to consider when deciding whether to hire a business coach or a business consultant:

  • Your budget: Business coaches and consultants can range in price – it’s important to invest in someone that can deliver the results you are looking for.
  • Your needs: What specific areas of your business do you need help with? Once you know what your needs are, you can start to look for professionals who have experience in those areas.
  • Your style: Do you prefer to work with someone who is hands-on and supportive, or do you prefer to work with someone who provides advice and lets you implement it yourself?
  • Your personality: It is important to choose a coach or consultant who you feel comfortable with and who you can trust.
  • Their experience: Not all coaches or consultants have the same background, level of experience or business philosophy. Asking for recommendations and referrals for a coach or consultant is a great place to start but it really comes down to how well they understand your business challenges and how their experience aligns with your needs.

Which one is right for you?

The best way to decide whether to hire a business coach or a business consultant is to consider your specific needs and goals. If you are looking for help developing your skills and knowledge, and you want ongoing support and guidance, then a business coach may be a good fit for you. If you are looking for advice and solutions to specific business problems, then a business consultant may be the right option.
